Electric Fencing and Repairs Gauteng

The function of an electric fence is to deter people or animals from crossing a boundary. The electric shock from the fence can range from uncomfortable to very painful and in some cases may even be lethal.

Electric fencing today is generally used in South Africa for security purposes, but it also includes agricultural functions by keeping animals in or out of the property. When an electric fence is touched by a person or an animal an electrical circuit is created.

Electric fences make use of a component known as a power energizer which converts the power into a short quick high voltage pulse. An animal or person who comes into contact with the fence wire will complete the electrical circuit and conduct the pulse, this has the effect of causing an electric shock. The pain or effects of the shock will vary depending on the voltage and current used and also the amount of contact between the recipient and the fence or ground.

The most popular electric fencing installations is the wall top electric fence. This remains the most practical and cost effective system as it is simply added to the top of your existing structure. This is used, as you would see when just travelling down the road, on a wide range of different locations which include private homes, estates, building complexes, office parks, industrial units and areas.

Electric fencing is installed on the perimeter of your property and acts as the first line of defence against any unwanted intruders. You must consider this when looking at your budget for your fencing project, high quality products installed by professionals will ensure your safety is not compromised.

Our team at MK Security will professionally install your electric fence and can assist you with finding and eliminating other high risk points that you could have missed.

Electrified fences must be insulated from the earth and any other materials that conduct electricity. The fencing must not be fixed directly to metal or wooden posts, and avoid any vegetation, undergrowth etc. Wood or metal posts require porcelain or plastic insulators to be attached to them, and the fencing material wire etc, is then attached to the insulators.

Electric Fencing is usually made from a steel wire and comes in different thickness levels as well as a range of designs. When installing this around your property it needs to be earthed from all elements and materials that can typically cause the fence to short out, set fire or conduct electricity. Any materials such as vegetation should be kept away from the electric fencing and this should never be attached to any metal or wood posts. All electric fencing should be attached to insulators made from plastic or porcelain.

Fundamentals of Electric fencing

With the fencing connected to a powered energiser a short high voltage electrical pulse can be generated when contact is made with the wire.

As one of the terminals are connected to the powered energiser producing an electrical pulse at the rate of 1 per second the other terminal is connected to a rod made from metal which is embedded in the earth’s crust.

This is typically known as an earth rod or ground rod. How this works is once the animal or person touches the wire fencing and the earth’s crust which the ground rod is embedded, an electrical pulse will be generated and an electric shock received.
